Getting Married at San Francisco City Hall: What You Should Know

Here Are a Few Key Things to Keep in Mind When Booking Not Every Friday Is Open

City Hall doesn’t offer reservations every single Friday. If you have a specific date in mind, be sure to check availability early so you’re not caught by surprise.

Marriage License and Ceremony Must Be Booked Separately

These two appointments are not automatically linked. While you may be able to secure a marriage license well in advance, ceremony slots often fill up much faster — especially during peak wedding seasons — so don’t wait too long to reserve both.

San Francisco City Hall Ceremony Guidelines

Ceremony hours are typically Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM

A maximum of six guests is allowed (this includes your photographer, videographer, children, and witnesses)

For a public ceremony, at least one witness is required

For a confidential (private) ceremony, no witness is necessary

Be sure to bring your original marriage license — City Hall does not issue licenses on site

Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early to allow time for check-in

Even if you’re unable to secure a standard ceremony reservation, there are still options available. Some couples choose to hire a licensed officiant to perform a civil ceremony at San Francisco City Hall, and your photographer can still document the experience beautifully.

A Photographer’s Perspective

As a San Francisco wedding photographer, I’ve photographed over 800 weddings — many of them at City Hall. I’m deeply familiar with the lighting on every floor, the best angles throughout the building, and the logistics that help the day flow smoothly and stress-free.

City Hall is a stunning architectural space, but knowing how to navigate its natural light, busy hallways, and ceremony timing makes all the difference in creating elegant, effortless images.
